We have seen a significant increase in Marcus’ ability to stay awake and alert. He still has that weird nocturnal schedule where he is up at 2 am, but his daytime awareness is much improved.
The trache is still in, but it has been capped for several days straight. The hope is that in another week or so it can finally be removed–one more thing crossed off on his road to recovery. 🙌🏿
The CRS test was given again, and Marcus moved from a score of 14 to 18. The last few items that are left are things like intentional communication and consistent deliberate response when given choices. There is no timetable for when that would occur, but all signs are pointing to him eventually getting there.
My auntie said something that helped put this journey into perspective. She compared the minimally conscious state to the time during pregnancy. Yes there are progressions and things that need to be prepared for. The real work (just like post birth) starts once he emerges from this state. There will be a whole new set of challenges, accomplishments, and memories to look forward to.
