Stem Cell Therapy Update
On August 3, Marcus received stem cell therapy as part of our continued effort to explore every reasonable opportunity that may support his recovery.
Stem cell therapy is a treatment that uses stem cells—cells capable of developing into different types of cells—to support the body’s natural repair and healing processes.
We understand that stem cell therapy is not a guaranteed treatment or cure for an anoxic brain injury, and we are approaching this next phase with both hope and realistic expectations. Weeks 2 through 12 following treatment are especially important for carefully charting and documenting any changes we observe.
And so far, we have noticed some encouraging things.
Marcus’s hands appear to be loosening up, something we are especially pleased to see given the tightness and tone he has dealt with throughout his recovery.
His eye contact has been AWESOME! He seems increasingly engaged when looking at and interacting with the people around him.
We’ve also heard more sounds and noises coming from his mouth. We don’t know yet what these attempts will lead to, but considering how hard Marcus has been working to communicate, every sound gets our attention and gives us another reason to keep encouraging him.
One moment from the day of treatment also stands out.
After Marcus’s treatment was completed, one of the nurses began talking to him and telling him how beautiful his eyelashes were. Marcus responded by smiling from ear to ear. Unfortunately, none of us were quick enough to capture a picture of that smile, but it’s a moment we won’t forget.
As we move through this important 2-to-12-week period, we will continue documenting what we see—his communication, eye contact, awareness, movement, muscle tone, responsiveness, and interactions. We don’t want to assume that every change is necessarily the result of one treatment, but we absolutely want to recognize and document the progress we are witnessing.
Marcus will also continue with his overall rehabilitation program, including HBOT, GyroStim, standing, Quadriciser sessions, TENS and vibration therapy, stretching, massage, and his home therapy program.
Throughout this journey, we’ve learned that progress doesn’t always arrive in giant leaps. Sometimes it’s a hand that isn’t quite as tight, eye contact that lasts a little longer, a new sound, or a smile that stretches from ear to ear.
Those moments matter.
We will continue watching, documenting, encouraging, and giving Marcus every opportunity possible.
Thank you to everyone who continues to pray for Marcus, love him, support him, and check in on his well-being. Your prayers, messages, calls, visits, and words of encouragement mean more to our family than you know. We are incredibly grateful to have so many people continuing to walk alongside Marcus on this journey.
No stone will be left unturned.
We remain hopeful, we remain patient, and most importantly, Marcus continues to fight.
