As we anxiously await the nursing interviews scheduled to take place within the next week, Team Marcus continues preparing for the next major transition in his care: moving from Almost Home Kids to the apartment in Chicago. We have another meet-and-greet with potential nursing staff in the coming days, and with Marcus’ approved nursing hours increasing from 56 to 84 hours per week, it is likely that we will need two to three nurses to provide the level of care he requires. We are tentatively considering 12-hour shifts, though the final schedule will depend on the outcome of our upcoming meetings.
While we stay focused on securing the medical support Marcus needs, we are also working through an unexpected challenge involving the Ronald McDonald House. We have communicated repeatedly, and with full transparency, that although Team Marcus works together for Marcus’ benefit, we are still separate households. Some members have permanent or long-term residence in Chicago, but others do not. This was understood and acknowledged when housing arrangements were discussed prior to securing the apartment in April.
However, with Marcus now nearing discharge, the Ronald McDonald House has unexpectedly reversed its position and has indicated that none of our team members will be permitted to stay. This development has added another significant task to our already full plate at a time when our attention needs to remain on Marcus’ nursing and medical stability. It has been a frustrating setback, particularly after assurances were previously given.
Throughout this journey, we have repeatedly witnessed just how complex, bureaucratic, and disjointed the medical support world can be. Whether it is insurance, medical facilities, housing programs, or overlapping government requirements, the amount of red tape and procedural obstacles has been an eye-opening, and often disheartening, reality. The situation with Marcus is already unimaginably difficult on a daily basis. One would hope that the systems designed to support families in crisis would be more accessible, more efficient, and above all, more compassionate.
Still, we remain committed and focused. Marcus deserves the best care possible, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure he receives it.
Thank you to everyone who continues to stand with us along this journey. Your support means more than words can express.
