Home Health Care Update for Marcus
Since Marcus was admitted to Almost Home Kids in January, our long-term goal has been to transition him into a home care setting while continuing his therapy. We reached the first major milestone in April when we successfully secured appropriate housing to accommodate his complex medical needs.
The next critical step in this process is securing home health nursing support. At Marcus’s current level of need, his care requires multiple caregivers. Many of his daily medical and mobility-related tasks cannot be safely performed by a single person. For this reason, home health nursing care is a medical necessity as we prepare for his discharge.
We have recently begun consultations with several nursing agencies to initiate services. Once we confirm adequate nursing coverage, Almost Home Kids will be able to provide us with a discharge date.
With a discharge date in hand, we will then be eligible to receive delivery of essential medical equipment, including Marcus’s hospital bed, Hoyer lift, and other durable medical equipment. Unfortunately, insurance guidelines allow delivery only within 48 hours prior to discharge, so we must wait until the date is finalized to receive and begin setting up the necessary equipment.
This stage of transition is both exciting and overwhelming. While it is a major step forward in Marcus’s recovery journey to leave a facility setting, it also marks a significant increase in responsibility for his caregivers—an undertaking that is both meaningful and, at times, daunting.
We remain committed to ensuring Marcus has the safest and most supportive environment possible as we navigate this next chapter in his care.
