Week 2 at AHK and Shirley Ryan outpatient care went reasonably well.
Marcus was placed on the Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike. The FES uses electrical pulses to stimulate motor neurons or denervated muscle fibers directly to elicit a contraction during a functional activity. He was on the bike for approximately 30 minutes. He focused on the video monitor while riding and was very attentive. He finished the week with the standing table, which locks him in–head and neck control are the primary focus. Overall it was a very good week, and he got to experience some of the frigid Chicago winter while being transported to and from therapy.
Later in the week, they used electrical stimulation on his right bicep and tricep, to which he also responded favorably. He generally works for 50 minutes, has about a ten minute break, and then goes right into his next session.
Therapists are using a talking red push button to attempt to give him a way to communicate. They offer him choices and ask him to use his chin to push the button to decide which choice he wants. The choices range from food to music to workout breaks.
Marcus has spontaneous smiles at times, especially when humorous conversations happen around him, and he does at times play possum with his therapist.
Thanks again for all the cards, letters and pictures; the pictures are used in his therapy sessions. His 18th birthday is fast approaching and we are looking forward to celebrating the day (if you want to participate in our project see the post “8teen Approaching”). Thank you for the continued thoughts and prayers.
