Over the last week or so Marcus has made tremendous strides in eating puréed food. Marcus seems more enthusiastic about trying things as we introduce more than just ice chips, applesauce, and yogurt. He has had several spoonfuls of mashed potatoes, pudding, pureed bread, and even more drinks. The therapists he works with consistently say he is slow to get started, but once he does, he’s doing a great job chewing and swallowing his food. 

Insurance and facility wise, after three separate 48-hour extensions, we have been given some breathing room. The health trust (Brandon’s local health insurance administion) has given another extension until December 31, 2024. The current plan is for Marcus to go to Almost Home Kids in the new year, a facility inside of the Ronald McDonald House. While at Almost Home Kids Marcus would still be able to do day therapy at Shirley Ryan and would still have around the clock care. As it is the week of Christmas, Almost Home Kids is not accepting any admissions this week so we are trying to get a walk-through on December 30. We are cautiously optimistic about this move to AHK and are thankful that some doors have been opened to allow it to happen.

While it’s not the way any of us expected to celebrate Christmas this year, we are thankful that a large chunk of us (Team Marcus) are able to be here with him during the holidays. We are blessed to be able to surround him with family, friendly faces, love, and support. Some of those friendly faces include Skylar, Marcus’ first PT from Alaska Regional. She and her family came by this week to see Marcus and team, wish him Merry Christmas, and gift some goodies. We are so incredible thankful.
