Transition, transition, transition…

Marcus has made yet another transition on his journey. He is now receiving puréed foods through his G-tube, and we’re happy to report that he’s tolerating them well. This new method seems to agree with him far more than the previous Peptamen formula, which often caused him discomfort.

Communication Progress

Marcus’s speech therapist has introduced a new method to reinforce communication using simple tactile cues—specifically, the concepts of “More” and “Stop.” Here’s how it works:

    •    We present Marcus with three choices (e.g., different objects, activities, or foods).

    •    Using hand placement, two fingers are placed gently under his chin.

    •    We wait five seconds for a response:

    •    If Marcus touches his chin to the fingers, that indicates “More.”

    •    If there’s no response, we repeat the options a second time.

    •    If still no response, we verbally say, “We’re making the choice,” and then swipe his chin to indicate a choice has been made for him.

This exercise is practiced for 15 minutes, four times a day, and we are seeing small but meaningful signs of engagement from him.

Physical Therapy

Due to the spasticity in his body, Marcus continues to receive regular therapy focused on stretching and massage. His therapist, a former college basketball player, uses a strong yet gentle approach, and Marcus clearly responds positively to him. Their connection has been nice to witness.

Looking Ahead

Progress may be slow, but it is steady. As we often remind ourselves, this is a marathon—not a sprint. And as always, Marcus is running a strong and courageous race.
