Marcus was somewhat tired this week. Doctors tweaked his medication and they believe that was the reason for him being lethargic. The plan was to score him on the Disorder of Consciousness scale, but due to him being so tired they wanted to make sure he’s fully awake for the assessment.
Therapist introduced thickened cranberry juice, Powerade, and lemonade to him this week. He seems to love the Dole lemonade. He also got to sample lemon ice and sherbet as well.
In Marcus’ dsyphagia testing, they give him a spoon of liquid. The goal is to get 15 spoons in the hour with two to three swallows in per spoon. Therapists use electronic stimulation to help him swallow. It’s similar to getting reps in the gym. He has met the goals in each of his sessions with the reps increasing each session. Marcus loves pumpkin pie so the therapist has said if family brings in a piece they will use it during his swallowing studies this week.
Marcus is responding to some commands for eye, head and mouth movement and has done well in sessions with lifting and holding his head in place without assistance.
Thanks again for following Marcus in his recovery.
